Trembling Before G-d (2001)
Built around intimately-told personal stories of Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are either gay or lesbian, this unprecedented feature documentary shatters assumptions about faith, sexuality and religious fundamentalism. It portrays a group of people who face a profound dilemma on how to reconcile their passionate love of Judaism and the Divine with the drastic Biblical prohibitions that forbid homosexuality. As the film unfolds, we meet a range of complex individuals -- some hidden, some out -- from the world's first openly gay Orthodox rabbi to closeted, married Hasidic gays and lesbians to those abandoned by religious families to Orthodox lesbian high-school sweethearts. Many have been tragically rejected and their pain is raw, yet with irony, humor, and resilience, they love, care, struggle, and debate with a thousand-year old tradition.

On the Bus (2001)
Los Angeles filmmaker Dustin Lance Black chartered a bus to attend the annual Burning Man Festival, an alternative culture event in the Nevada desert, and made the trip along with six gay friends in their late teens and early twenties. He teams up with William Kaufman who is the producer of the project. Black brought along a camera to record the trip for posterity, and On the Bus is a documentary that chronicles the misadventures of Black and his traveling companions on the road, among them Charles Kinsley, a former exotic dancer who now waits tables while he tries to get his acting career off the ground; Jason Webb, a former Midwesterner who now makes his living as a porn star; Jimmy Sjodin, a Swedish Olympic diver; and Damon Intrabartolo, a music composer. On the Bus was initially commissioned as a multi-part reality series for the Digital Entertainment Network, an online film and video site; when DEN went out of business, Black reshaped his footage into its current form as a feature-length documentary.

Kampvuur (1999) Camp-fire
In Kampvuur, the narrative short film follows a scout camping trip during which Tijl (Joram Schurmans), a teen boy that lacks self- confidence, abandons his girlfriend Ineke (Circé Lethem) for a brief fling with his best mate Wout (Koen Van Heule). There's an almost painful sense of longing as Tijl tries to figure out what's going on inside of him -- yet the real problem is that he knows fully well and doesn't want to act on it. This feature is beautifully filmed with an almost hyper-real sense of nature and teen sexual yearning.
In Particularly now, in Spring, a group of young athletes gathered together for their usual sporting activity whilst Olaf (Olaf Nollen) narrates the day (in English), talking about his goal to become a big-time first and foremost as well as his enjoyment of the camaraderie between physically active teen boys. His innocent desire is palpable but wonderfully understated. The film is in black & white.
In Matroos, teenager Joram Roodhooft (Joram Schurmans) dreams about sailor Tom de With (Tom de With), imagining his adventures around the world. The vividly colourful images are surreal and magical, whilst the actors convey fairly profound emotion without ever saying a word. This is a silent film in colour.
In Saint, black and white photography is used again and another silent film that tells about the trial and execution of St Sebastian (Olaf Nollen), known as the patron saint of homosexuals. Stunning imagery combines with a simple story to build real suspense -- and an uncanny level of eroticism -- as Sebastian is led through the woods, tied to a tree and then targeted by the Roman army's archers.
