Der Film beginnt mit dem Ende: Der Abiturient und Dichter Paul Krantz (Daniel Brühl) sitzt in Untersuchungshaft und wird dem Richter vorgeführt. Gemeinsam mit seinem besten Freund, dem selbstbewussten und reichen Günther Scheller (August Diehl), hat er einen Selbstmörderclub gegründet. Die Justiz verlangt nach Erklärungen... Drei Tage zuvor: Paul und Günther wollen das Wochenende auf dem feudalen Landsitz von Günthers Eltern in Mahlow nahe Berlin verbringen. Sie laden noch einige Freunde aus der Stadt ein, um zügellos zu feiern. Paul verliebt sich in Günthers lebenshungrige Schwester Hilde (Anna Maria Mühe), die sich allerdings nicht mit einem Mann begnügen will. Mit dem Koch Hans (Thure Lindhardt) hat sie eine Affäre. Doch auch ihr Bruder Günther ist unsterblich in den bisexuellen Hans verliebt, will aber von ihm loskommen. Hildes beste Freundin Elli (Jana Pallaske) hat sich unterdessen in Paul verguckt und will ihn für sich gewinnen, obwohl sie weiß, dass er in Hilde verliebt ist. In einer Mischung aus Liebe, Lust nach Leben und hemmungsloser Eifersucht steigert sich die Party in einen Rausch aus Alkohol, Absinth und Musik. Paul und Günther schmieden einen Plan. In der Stunde des vollkommenden Glücks wollen sie freiwillig aus dem Leben scheiden – am höchsten Punkt. Oder den mit in den Tod nehmen, der ihre Liebe abweist...
The film begins with the end: Poet Pal Krantz (Daniel Brühl) is seated in the pre-trial detention and awaiting interrogation. With his best friend, rich and self confident Günther Scheller (August Diehl), together they founded a suicide club. The judge asks for explanations... Three days before: Paul and Günther want to spend the weekend on the feudal country estate of Günther's parents in Mahlow near Berlin. They invite a few friends from the city to unrestrained celebration. Paul is fascinated by Günther's sister Hilde (Anna Maria Mühe) and falls in love with her. And first it looks in such a way, that Paul's feelings are finally answered. But Hilde loves another one. Secretly she meets with a young good-looking Hans (Thure Lindhardt) - Günther's former lover. Hans is a boy from a much lower class who works in the kitchen of a restaurant/dance club. Meanwhile the Hilde's best friend Elli (Jana Pallaske) has her eyes on Paul and wants to win him for herself, although she knows that he is in love in Hilde. In the garden of the house their celebration becomes a roller coaster because of love, desire after life and unrestrained jealousy accompanied by too much alcohol, absinthe and music that gets out of control. Is that really it, the highest point in the life? Günther and Paul are convinced of it: They want to live, in full courses and without compromises -- and they require the same in love...
