Simon (Gaspard Ulliel), jeune étudiant aux Beaux-arts, vient passer les vacances de Noël chez ses parents dans leur maison familiale en bord de mer. Il arrive accompagné d'une jeune inconnue, Louise (Mélanie Laurent), qu'il a rencontrée dans le train. La famille les croit en couple. Simon est un garçon secret, l'oeil toujours collé à sa camera super-8. Tout en étant très indépendant, il entretient avec sa mère Marie (Nicole Garcia) une relation complice et tendre. Elle seule comprend et accepte son choix de suivre des études artistiques, tandis que son père et sa soeur méprisent la vie qu'il mène. Un jour, un coup de fil bouleverse Marie. Simon (Gaspard Ulliel), a young Fine arts student is spending his Christmas holidays with his family at their seaside residence. He arrives with Louise (Mélanie Laurent) whom he only met whilst commuting in the train. All the family members believe that he is with his girlfriend for Simon is a very secretive person who always carries his video camera almost everywhere he goes. Although he is very independent, he maintains a special bond and loving relation with his mother Marie (Nicole Garcia) as she is the only member in the family that understands and accepts his choice to follow artistic inclinations whilst his father and her sister despise the life he leads. One day, Marie received an unexpected phone call from someone whom she has met some twenty odd years ago who happens to be around the area.
